Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix gears up for June 1-3 event DETROIT (Tell Us Det) - Brazilian IndyCar star Tony Kanaan won the 2007 Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix race, which was one of the last to be run on the island until now. "Detroit is the Motor City. To me it didn't make sense not to have an IndyCar race here," said Kanaan. "I think with the comeback of Chevrolet, with the involvement of Roger Penske in racing, it would be not fair not to have a race here. I'm extremely excited about it. I think the track looks fabulous and the last time we were here we had so many people watching us, so it means a lot." Bud Denker, the Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, has been working non-stop to make the Grand Prix weekend a thrilling memory for the fans in Michigan, Ontario and beyond. "Someone coming to the race for the first time is going to hear, going to feel, going to sense everything going on," said Denker. "Obviously, wonderful excitement. Four different races going on that weekend, from 8 o'clock til 7 o'clock, Friday through Sunday, something going on on the racetrack and also great entertainment. "B-52's in the concert. Sam Schmidt is a former Indy Racing League driver and current IZOD IndyCar Series and Firestone Indy Lights Series team owner. Sam became a Hospital Administrator by age 24, purchased his father's parts company in 1989, and was involved with other entrepreneurial successes such as Arnette sunglasses, Copart, and Precision Healthcare. In 1993, Sam won the SCCA National Championship in F2000, but dreamed of someday driving in the Indianapolis 500. In 1995, Sam raced professionally in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series finishing third in points for the season and winning Rookie of the Year honors. In 1997 he made his first IndyCar start and became a rising star in the league, raced in 3 consecutive Indianapolis 500's, and netted his first victory from the pole at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1999, finishing fifth in series points that year. While testing in preparation for the 2000 season, Schmidt suffered a horrendous crash at Walt Disney World Speedway. The accident rendered him a quadriplegic. After leaving the hospital, Schmidt, no longer able to drive a racecar, realized he needed to find a new passion. Inspired by meeting paraplegic Formula One team owner Sir Frank Williams, he founded Sam Schmidt Motorsports, which has become the most successful team in the history of the Firestone Indy Lights Series. In addition to the motorsports enterprise, Sam established the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation to further the cause of paralysis research, treatment and quality of life issues.
www.autobytel.com The Australian Izod Indycar driver Will Power won the 2012 Long Beach Grand Prix for the second time (2008 win) after starting from 12th on the grid. That is because Indycar imposed a 10 position penalty for the Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet at the start of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, this is because Chevrolet decided to replace the turbocharged V6 engines in all of their cars for reliability reasons, even though it was before the Izod Indycar rules allow. As if the initial setback wasn't enough, Power fought his way to the front before having to slow down and conserve fuel in the closing laps with the second place driver closing in fast. Will Power was able to save just enough gas to stall out on the cool down lap after being bunched up in the hairpin. However being the good sport that he is, Will jumped out of his race car and gave a short celebration for the fans at the beginning of the straight before he and his team helped get the rest of the cars off the track.
